A 50-year-old Roanoke Rapids man died in a single-vehicle crash on Thelma Road Sunday night.

Sergeant A.S. Genao of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the man who perished in the crash, Derrick Jones, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 41-year-old Joshua Lamont Bowser. Bowser was flown to Duke University Hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

The collision occurred about 3.5 miles west of Roanoke Rapids and 2.3 miles west of Zoo Road.

Genao said, according to a preliminary investigation by Trooper R.P. Dennis, that around 8:15 p.m. Bowser was traveling west in a Nissan Maxima at a high rate of speed and went off the roadway to the right.

The driver overcorrected and crossed the centerline going the wrong way. The vehicle traveled off the road to the left, collided with a ditch and then a tree.

Jones, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Genao said any charges are pending and alcohol use is presently unknown. He said if the vehicle is downloadable then troopers will be able to determine an exact speed.
