World War II veteran David “Shorty” Fowler participated in American Legion Post 38’s flag retirement ceremony on Monday.

Fowler is a Roanoke Rapids resident.

Under the United States Flag Code, Title 4, Section 8K says, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.”

Residents and businesses are encouraged to drop off their faded or tattered flags at the drop box located at 717 American Legion Road.

The next flag retirement ceremony will be held June 7 at 6 p.m.
