The cumulative total of positive cases of COVID-19 since testing began in March has surpassed the 1,000 mark, the health department reported today.

Nine new positive cases bring the cumulative total to 1,006.

The trend continues to show an increase after several decreases were reported earlier this month.

There have been 19 related deaths — 15 within the Roanoke Rapids area ZIP code; two within the Weldon area ZIP code; one within the Enfield area ZIP code; and one within the Scotland Neck area ZIP code.

The state Department of Health and Human Services congregate living report which comes out each Tuesday shows eight of the deaths within the Roanoke Rapids area ZIP code have been at Signature HealthCare.

Data on recoveries and current cases are expected to be reported Wednesday. The report sent out this past Wednesday showed a recovery rate of 92.5 percent — 906 — and 56 current patients.

The health department continues to encourage residents to continue to practice the three Ws — waiting six feet apart, handwashing and wearing a facial covering. “Improving your compliance with the three Ws now will both better educate children as to how to practice them. Please take this opportunity to protect our children and each other very seriously,” the health department said.
