Vidant North Hospital, on behalf of the Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative announced that it has received a grant to continue coordinating access to recreation for the Roanoke Valley from Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in Winston-Salem.

“The project will improve the lives of local residents by creating more access to recreation through community engagement with healthy eating and active living opportunities throughout Halifax and Northampton County,” a statement announcing the grant said.

The grant totaling $300,000 is to be implemented over the course of three years and is a continuation of the recreation-related work started in the Roanoke Valley in 2012 with the formation of the RV-CHI.

“Funding to continue the work around recreation is critical to helping improve health, education, and economic opportunities for Halifax County,” said Audrey Hardy, an RN and RV-CHI coordinating council member. “Recreational opportunities have been shown as one of the equalizers for communities disproportionately affected by diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and their complications.”

RV-CHI was founded to provide residents with resources and education to help them live a healthier lifestyle.

Since its inception, the RV-CHI has increased access to play spaces, healthy foods and organized recreation opportunities. These factors are directly related to the county’s ranking in the state for health outcomes.

“Vidant North Hospital, formerly known as Halifax Regional Medical Center, is committed to improving the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina and very proud to support the work of the RV-CHI throughout the service area,” the statement said.

The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust was established in 1947 and is now one of the largest private trusts in North Carolina.

The Trust’s mission is to improve the health and quality of life of residents with low incomes in North Carolina.

The Health Improvement in North Carolina program area supports community-wide health solutions across the state.

The goal of the Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative is to empower residents in the Roanoke Valley to adopt healthier lifestyles, access preventative services, and take positive actions to improve health in our communities.

The vision of the Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative is that Roanoke Valley families and individuals are empowered to lead healthy lifestyles.

The mission of the Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative is to promote healthy living through education, empowerment, and health access.
