A Roanoke Rapids teen faces charges of murder and attempted murder following a shooting in the 500 block of West First Street in Weldon.

Weldon police Chief Christopher Davis said a man in his mid-20s died and a woman who was shot remains in critical condition.

The names of the victims, who were shot shortly before 11:45 this morning, are not being immediately released, Davis said this evening.

The shooting, in which Xavieryon Semaj Harvey, 19, was charged, was apparently the result of an argument of an undisclosed nature.

Officers discovered Harvey at the scene and took him into custody.

First responders and Halifax County EMS performed lifesaving techniques on the male victim but their efforts were unsuccessful, Davis said.

The woman was taken to a nearby medical facility.

Harvey was taken before a magistrate and was jailed without the opportunity for bond. He has a district court appearance scheduled Friday.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
