Halifax Community College (HCC) is proud to announce the schedule of events for the 2020 Black History Month celebration.

On Tuesday, February 4, HCC will host its 13th Annual Stamp Dedication Ceremony.

This year, the college will recognize Marvin Gaye and Gwen Ifill.

Gaye was a charismatic and popular musician of the 1960s and 1970s.

Known as the “Prince of Soul,” Gaye was one of the most influential musicians of his generation.

Ifill was one of America’s most esteemed journalists. Among the first Afircan Americans to hold a prominent position in both broadcast and print journalism, she was both a trailblazer and an inspiration. Ifill lost her battle with cancer in 2016.

The Stamp Dedication ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in the Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. Centre.

On Tuesday, February 11, Frank McMahon of Historic Halifax will present “Black Patriots of the Revolution.” The engaging and enlightening program will detail the history of the patriots of the Roanoke Valley who were critical to America winning its independence.

These often-overlooked heroes will be honored and remembered, ensuring their legacy of heroism remains.

The “Black Patriots of the Revolution” program will begin at 11 a.m. in Room 401 on the campus of HCC.

On Wednesday, Feb. 26, HCC will host the 13th Annual Local African American Heroes celebration.

Each recipient, nominated by one of their peers, has served to change the lives of individuals within the local African American community. Whether through their organization or their own initiatives, these individuals prove that one person can indeed change the world. Past winners include Dr. Stanley Edwards, Judge Alma Hinton, the Honorable Vernon Bryant, Sen. Erica Ingram, Captain James Miller, and Dr. Stephanie Credle.

The “Saluting Our Local African American Heroes” celebration will take place at 11 a.m. in the Dr. Ervin V. Griffin, Sr. Centre.
