A woman who was shot Wednesday night with her 10-year-old son in the car remains in critical condition, according to the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office.

Captain Scott Hall said deputies responded to the area of Branch Avenue and Key Street around 9 p.m. and located a vehicle in a field.

The vehicle was occupied by a 41-year-old mother, who had been shot in the upper torso. Her son was in the vehicle.

Hall said deputies and EMS personnel worked on the victim to prepare her for transport to ECU North. The victim was then taken to a trauma unit.

Hall declined to immediately elaborate on the case and said detectives are continuing to investigate to determine the motive.
