The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Bobby Martin:

Saturday morning shortly before 2:15 Officer C. Majette responded to the 200 block of Monroe Street about a gunshot victim who had also been beaten in the face and head.

The officer was flagged down by a man at the intersection of Third and Monroe streets and observed another man sitting on the curb asking for help about the gunshot wound and his head injury, which caused a laceration.

The man had been shot in the stomach and two or three people struck him in the head, Martin said.

The victim was transported for medical treatment and as of this report was listed in fair condition.

A check of the area where the shooting occurred revealed what appeared to be methamphetamine in baggies. “We believe this was a drug deal gone bad due to the narcotics found in the area of the incident and the known activity in this area,” Martin said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.

On Friday shortly after 9 p.m. Master Officer S. Langley responded to the area of East Tenth Street and Park Avenue about a vehicle stopped at a light. The occupants appeared to be unconscious.

Langley confirmed the two men were unconscious and observed they were leaned back with the vehicle in drive.

A knock on the window prompted no response. After breaking out the rear window glass with assistance from the fire department the passenger responded and the vehicle was placed in park. The driver, identified as Ernest Hux Jr., 40, of Roanoke Rapids, was administered Narcan and revived.

Hux faces charges of DWI and driving while license revoked. He received a $5,000 bond and October 10 court date.
