Foundation gets $25,000 in scholarship funds

Halifax Community College Friday received a total of $25,000 in contributions that will be used for scholarship programs.

Halifax Linen pledged $10,000 to the HCC Foundation to a establish a scholarship in honor of Charles P. McElheney Jr., at its annual Christmas celebration. The scholarship was started on behalf of the company's employees.

Halifax Linen President Preston McElheney and his wife, Lindsey, pledged to match the company's pledge with another $10,000 to honor his father.

Meanwhile, Branch Banking & Trust presented a $5,000 check to Halifax Community College that will benefit the BB&T Scholarship Fund, which will provide two scholarships at the college.

BB&T is contributing up to $10,000 per year for five years. This is the final year of the pledge.

Funds will be used to support local high school students with the highest grade point average from their respective schools within the service area who intend to attend HCC.
