With temperatures expected to be in the mid-50s, Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Director John Simeon says Sunday should “be a great day for a parade.”

The annual Roanoke Rapids Christmas Parade steps off at 2 p.m., beginning at 13th Street and going down Roanoke Avenue to First Street.

“This parade is to honor exceptional children and our community supports the efforts in helping the children succeed,” said Roanoke Rapids interim police Chief Andy Jackson. “I think community will support this cause.”

Simeon said parade organizers chose to honor Belmont Elementary School teacher Wendy Tickel and her students were chosen as grand marshals. “She was recognized on the national level for her efforts as an exceptional children's teacher here in Roanoke Rapids. I think it's important we recognize her for her efforts and how dedicated she is to so many special needs children.”

Simeon is expecting around 110 units for the parade, made up of civic groups, community members, Shriner units and bands.

There will be four Shrine units made up of clowns, vehicles and local members.

The Elizabeth City State University Marching Band will be one of four bands in the parade. “To my knowledge, this is the first time we have had a collegiate band in the history of the parade,” Simeon said. “Securing a collegiate band has been our goal and the staff has worked hard to make that happen.”

The Weldon High School band, the Chaloner Middle School band and the Roanoke Rapids High School marching band will also perform.

Jackson said people need to be mindful to not park their cars in the business district after church so the view for small children won't be blocked. “You don't want cars to get damaged when people are walking by.”

He said don't place lawn chairs on the sidewalk. No fireworks, firearms or alcohol is allowed.

Before the parade 14th Street and Roanoke Avenue will be blocked off and the downtown traffic will be diverted to the Washington and Jackson street extensions.

In a statement released this morning, City Manager Joseph Scherer said administration is aware of unfounded rumors regarding potential protests planned during the parade.

“The city administration has taken steps to ensure the parade is conducted in the outstanding manner it is known for while ensuring sufficient safety measures are in place for the event.”

Said Scherer: “It is the city’s intent to have the Christmas parade that everyone can enjoy in the holiday spirit it is intended to represent, while keeping everybody safe from potential risks, as has always been done for every Christmas parade and city events. The city hopes that everyone will respect the fact that the Christmas parade this year is honoring Wendy Tickel and her class of exceptional children as the parade’s grand marshals.”
