Vernon Bryant will lead the Halifax County Board of Commissioners as its chair while Rives Manning will be the vice chair.

Manning nominated Bryant, who was re-elected in the November 4 general election. Manning's motion, which was seconded by newly elected Commissioner Patrick Qualls, passed by a 4-2 vote, with Carolyn Johnson and Marcelle Smith voting against. No other motions for chairman were made during today's meeting.

Bryant nominated Manning, who was also re-elected last month, for vice chair on a motion seconded by Rachel Hux. Johnson and Smith voted against the measure.

“I look forward to serving the citizens and representing the board to the best of my abilities,” Bryant, who was the top vote-getter in the November commissioner's race, said.

Bryant said during a break in the meeting he wanted to take a positive direction for the county to recruit more jobs. “We need to get more jobs across the county from Hobgood to Littleton.”

He also said he wants to work on improving education in the county.

During the meeting he said, “I thank the board of commissioners for electing me as chairman. I do pledge to do my very best to represent our great county.”

Manning's granddaughter, Charlotte, holds the Bible.

Manning said he was appreciative of the support of the voters in the county as well as the vote of confidence by the board to elect him as vice chairman. “We will have a good board. We will be serving all citizens of Halifax County.”

Qualls stands with his wife, Jen, to his left, and his children, from left, Hunt, Avery and Kendall.

Qualls said, “I thank the citizens of Halifax County who elected me. I look forward to working for everyone.”
