Alleged cocaine residue and a hidden machete led to charges for a Scotland Neck man Sunday morning.

Major Scott Hall of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that around 1 a.m. Deputy Emerson Carroll stopped a 2011 Buick on Highway 125 near Hobgood for a registration violation.

The driver, identified as Samuel Turner Harrell, was reportedly nervous and making unusual movements in the car.

When Carroll had Harrell exit the vehicle, he reportedly noticed a small bag that contained cocaine residue on the driver's seat.

Scotland Neck police Officer Thomas Hathaway assisted in the search and Carroll allegedly found a rock-like substance which was later identified as crack as well as a Hydrocodone pill in the center console.

Harrell was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of schedule II and carrying a concealed weapon.

He was jailed on $6,000 secured bond.
