A third person was taken into custody Wednesday in the shooting death of Wilton Lee Shawn Cotton last week and the shooting of another man who is now listed in stable condition.

Tyshon Jamill Alston, 17, of Garysburg, had no comment as he was escorted from the Roanoke Rapids Police Department by city detectives Jeff Davis and Bobby Martin.

Police Chief Andy Jackson said Alston faces one count of first-degree murder, one count of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon, one count of conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and two counts felony conspiracy. He was jailed without the opportunity for bond.

As the three people arrested thus far in the murder have been teenagers, Jackson declined immediate comment on how they allegedly got involved in the matter, which occurred last Wednesday on Gordon Drive near the Oak Street intersection.

To his knowledge, Jackson said, they all attended school.

He also declined to discuss any gang ties as several comments on rrspin.com come with the hashtag free the fam, a possible reference to The Fam, a Halifax County gang prevalent in the Enfield area.

With more arrests expected, Jackson said the arrests thus far have been a culmination of work done in assistance with the sheriff's offices of Northampton and Halifax counties and the Weldon Police Department. “The Halifax County Sheriff's Office has been a big asset to us in providing facilities for us to use. It's been a joint effort. Halifax County has really rolled out some hospitality.”

Davis and Martin, Jackson said, “Have worked relentless hours around the clock. I can't say enough about these guys and their work effort.”

Jackson said the name of the surviving victim is not being released yet out of safety concerns.

Cotton, 20, was shot and killed as he sat in a car with the surviving victim.
