The RRHS Lady Jackets tennis team
made the drive down US 158 to Henderson on Tuesday
afternoon to take on the Lady Raiders of Southern Vance.
The Lady Jackets got back in the win column, defeating
the Lady Raiders 9-0.
The 3-1 Lady Jackets were paced by #1 seed Jenny Sheley,
who defeated a very pesky Emonee Glover 6-4, 7-5. #2
seed Addie Nixon had a pretty easy time of it, defeating
Kyanna Champ 6-0, 6-0. #3 seed Emily Burnette, #4 seed
Mary Alice Clements, and #6 seed Emma Barber also had
little trouble with their opponents. Burnette defeated
Tamara Glover 6-0, 6-1, Clements took Lexus Fisher 6-1,
6-1, and Barber beat Navin Chavis 6-0, 6-1.

The match of the day was between the Lady Jackets’ Mary
Carlson and the Lady Raiders’ Brianna Escobar. Carlson
dropped the first set 1-6, but came screaming back to win
the second set 6-2. Carlson then fought back from a 3-8
deficit in the tie breaker to win 11-9, thus taking the tie
breaker and the match.

The Lady Jackets had little trouble in the doubles sets.
The combination of Sheley and Nixon dropped the Lady
Raiders duo of Emonee and Tamara Glover, 8-1. The #2
pair of Burnette and Clements defeated Shyann Simpson
and Kaliyah Tunstall 8-1. To complete the sweep, the team
of Carlson and Barber topped Maria Perez and Nigoria
Alston, 8-1.
The Lady Jackets will return home on Wednesday,
September 24th to play a strong South Granville team.
This match will be played at the T.J. Davis Recreation
Center. Their next match, also a home match at the
Davis Rec Center, is scheduled for Thursday, September
25th against the Wildcats of Bunn. The last match of the
regular season, also at the Davis Rec Center, is scheduled
for Tuesday, September 30th against the Durham School
of the Arts. All three matches are scheduled to begin at 4:30 PM.
