Cornerstone Christian located in Roanoke Rapids is starting a baseball and softball program this season.

School Athletic Director Steven Walker said, “The school students had an interest in playing ball so the school has chosen to give it a try. We have to start somewhere as we did with our basketball program and we want to give the children at Cornerstone an opportunity to participate on the diamonds.”

Because of the low total numbers of students at Cornerstone the teams were offered to 4th graders through seniors. Both teams will be dealing with young players as well as young skill levels.

Though the baseball team has only two senior, one is a beginner said baseball head coach Ralph Graham. Other than those two players the other eight teams are 4th grade through 8th graders and will be playing Middle school teams this season except one against NEA.

Baseball head coach Ralph Graham will be helped by Brock Pepper and Kieth Mumford with the team, while softball head coach Wendy mason will be helped by Jason Brown and Ariel Dunaway.

Macie Price takes in some hitting swings.

The girls have better numbers with thirteen girls on the team, but players range from 4th grade to 9th graders, several of witch have played recreation league in Roanoke Rapids.

Hana Brown warms up on the mound.

With no fields at Cornerstone, the school has worked with Gaston Middle school to rent their field for several days of practice and games. Each team will only play about 9 games this season with teams such as GCP, William R. Davie, NEA and Bethal Christian Gaston with their first game scheduled Tuesday April 1st at William R. Davie Middle school.
