Captain O.L. Morgan said the robbery occurred shortly before 7 this evening when a person believed to be a white male entered the store with a handgun and demanded money.
The clerk complied and the man, dressed in camouflage that concealed his face, left on foot with an undisclosed amount of money.
It was not clear which direction he left, but a police dog and officer were seen around the nearby storage buildings across from the Canal Museum.
Morgan said the man stood 5-feet, 8-inches tall and wore a camouflage coat, camouflage hoodie as well as camouflage garb that covered his face. He also wore blue jeans.
Morgan said police are warning other store clerks this evening to be on the lookout for the man, who has a stocky build.
No customers were inside the store at the time, and no one was injured. Police did interview a couple whose car was parked by the fuel pumps. The man declined comment.
