The Enfield Fire Department assisted the Halifax County Sheriff's Office Saturday after a man threw a bag containing approximately four ounces of marijuana and contraband into a creek following a traffic stop.

The stop occurred on Highway 301 near the Edgecombe County line when Deputy T.M. Sewell observed a car cross the center line, according to Major Scott Hall.

Hatu, left, and Gorham

While Sewell spoke to the driver, Majd Hatu, the passenger, Charven Keivon Gorham, exited the vehicle and allegedly threw a bag into a creek.

Hall said the fire department dragged the creek and recovered the bag, which was reportedly consistent with what Gorham, 20, of Enfield, allegedly threw.

The bag contained 120 grams of marijuana, a handgun, scales and cell phone. Both men were arrested and transported to the Halifax County Detention center. Hatu, 18, of Rocky Mount was charged with driving left of center, felony possession of marijuana, possession with the intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintain a vehicle to store a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Gorham was charged with felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintain a vehicle to store a controlled substance, carrying a concealed weapon, resist obstruct and delay and possession of drug paraphernalia. They were jailed on $10,000 secured bonds and have November 6 court dates.

In a statement, Sheriff Wes Tripp said, “ I would like to thank the Enfield Fire Department for their help and also praise Deputy Sewell’s dedicated hard work. This is good deputy sheriff work.”
