The group No Tolls I-95 called it “fantastic news” on its Facebook page.
“I think it’s great,” said Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Allen Purser. “It keeps some lanes free. I want to thank everybody that went to meetings, signed petitions and wrote letters and made their voice heard. It couldn’t be done without a team effort.”
While there is still some wording issues with the bill, “This bill being signed into law represents a victory in this particular battle to keep I-95 open and accessible to the citizens of the I-95 corridor as well as our tourism and commerce partners from other states who provide vital revenue to our economy,” said Ernie Brame, chair of the No Tolls Coalition in a letter to supporters. “I appreciate everyone's effort towards this goal. It has not been without it's share of struggles, and the team of people who have worked on behalf of I-95 have been awesome, and very much appreciated.”
While the bill forbids the tolling of existing lanes, it would allow any additional lanes to be tolled.
