The change in household garbage collection for Halifax County begins July 1, according to a notice from the county’s public utilities department.

In April county commissioners chose Unity Disposal and Recycling of Carolinas to handle garbage pickup after failing to reach a new agreement with Waste Industries.

The company is in the process of distributing household garbage rollout bins, which have the black tops, and recycling bins, which have the orange tops.

Trash pickup days are not expected to change, the county said in the notice, and recycling days will be on scheduled garbage days every other week.

The county will notify residents if there are any changes, the notice said.

A flyer from the company explains what is to go into recycle bins and garbage bins.

Items that should not be recycled include light bulbs, mirrors, Styrofoam, ceramics, Pyrex, wax paper, batteries, paper towels, painted and treated wood, padded and plastic envelopes.

The overall color of the bins has changed to reflect the company’s colors, a county spokesperson said.

Inquiries about the changeover should be directed to the public utilities department at 252-583-1807.
