The Roanoke Rapids Police Department will hold its annual community forum Thursday at Kirkwood Adams.

The event will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
One of the highlights of this year’s event will be the airing of the documentary Chasing the Dragon, a film produced by the Department of Justice, FBI and DEA about the opioid epidemic.
“It’s prevalent,” Hasty said of the problem both across the nation and locally. “We’re carrying Narcan to help revive people.”
More than 60 doses of Narcan have been administered by EMS in the county, Hasty said.
There are a number of deaths which are suspected to have been caused by heroin overdoses, he said.
The chief calls the documentary an honest look at the problem. “It’s talking about the truth of the opioid epidemic.”
Hasty plans to cover department demographics in his presentation, which include reports on staffing as well as crime breakdowns, traffic stop data and use of force data.
The staffing information will tell the story officers continue “to work hard with the same staff we’ve had since the early 90s.”
The forum goes along with ideas formulated in President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing.
“It’s about building trust and legitimacy in the community,” Hasty said.
