In all there were five fires, Halifax County Ranger Jim Short of the state Forest Service said.
There was one just west of Brownstone and the other four were past Information Grocery.
The Forest Service received the call around 8:30 this morning and the Davie and Littleton fire departments assisted.
One of the fires got fairly close to a home, Short said, but was not damaged.
Most of the fires were on the roadside and in yards, burning grass, pine straw and litter in a total area of about 2 ½ acres.
The fires were brought under control in about an hour.
Short said ranger investigation determined the fires most likely started from a bad catalytic converter after parts were spewed from a vehicle exhaust pipe.
Short said conditions are currently ripe for such fires. “It’s gotten to the point it’s dry. Grass and pine straw dry real quick.”
