The Roanoke Rapids Graded School District approved several changes Tuesday night that will impact students and parents in upcoming school year.

Roanoke Rapids High School will now offer a “POWER Block, ”an extended single lunch period for students to have lunch and participate in an array of activities.
Activities include, but are not limited to, tutorials during the teachers’ scheduled times twice a week, opportunities to gain service hours by providing assistance, intramural sports, clubs/organizations offered through RRHS, groups offered through Student Services, and departmental offerings such as guest speakers, career speakers/programs.
Additionally, seniors will be allowed to leave campus for lunch with a valid RRHS Lunch Pass and parent permission.
Parents will also now have access to their child’s grades and attendance using the Powerschool Parent Portal. The portal will provide parents additional communication with their child’s classroom teachers.
In an effort to recruit and retain teachers and staff members, board members approved the elimination of student tuition for all current and future full time employees who reside outside of the RRGSD.
There are currently 18 staff members who reside outside the district and bring students into the district.
Board member Joey Briggs said it’s time to change the way the district does business in an effort to make the district more competitive in its recruiting efforts.
