Roanoke Rapids businesses have lost around $1,000 due to the counterfeit bills.

While he could not provide an exact number, Captain Bobby Martin of the city's police department said, “There's been a substantial amount.”

Some of the passed bills go back to November and investigators from agencies across the area are looking at their own cases, Martin said. “Detective (Chris) Babb is investigating for our area. It's hard to say the amount. Just in what we have, we have right at $1,000 reported to us. That's a $1,000 loss to businesses.”

While he declined to discuss quality of the fake bills, he said investigators are seeing 20s, 50s, 100s and 5s being passed.

He also declined to discuss whether investigators believe the bills are being produced locally.

In a statement on the matter, Martin said the police department is seeking assistance from the public on identifying the two men pictured in the five photos.

“The RRPD is currently investigating multiple cases involving attempts to pass counterfeit bills at various local convenience stores. It is unknown at this time if any of the cases are related,” Martin said in the statement.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact law enforcement; the police department at 252-533-2810; Babb at 252-533-2823 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
