RRPD blotter: January 8-10, 2016

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following according to Chief Chuck Hasty:

Friday January 8, 2016

At approximately 4 p.m., Hasty and Master Officer Mark Peck, along with several other units, responded to a call about a careless and reckless driver in the area Jefferson and East Twelfth streets.

Hasty and Peck located and stopped the vehicle in the 1200 block of Washington Street.

The driver, Tomas Bolivar Maldonado, 24, of Roanoke Rapids, was determined to be intoxicated and his license was revoked.

Peck arrested and charged Maldonado with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked and a stop sign violation.

He was released to a responsible person until his February 8 court date.

Officer Jonathan Benthall assisted.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., Officer Patrick Smith responded to a larceny at The Store Next Door on Fifth Street.

Store staff reported a person, later determined to be Matthew Scott Liverman, 19, of Roanoke Rapids, took items without paying.

Smith arrested and charged Liverman with larceny and possession of stolen goods and discovered narcotics in his possession, leading to a charge of possession of schedule of VI.

Liverman was released to a responsible person until his February 12 court date.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., Lieutenant Jeff Baggett was working an off-duty assignment at Applebee’s when he noticed a person later determined to be Dashawn Jefferson, 25, of Skippers, with a firearm.

Baggett cited Jefferson, who was released until his February 19 court date, with carrying a concealed weapon.

Master Officer Gorton Williams assisted.

Saturday January 9, 2016

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Benthall responded to a larceny call at The Eye Center on Long Circle.

Staff reported a person, described as black male, took items without paying and left on foot.

Peck, Benthall and Officer Chris Biggerstaff located a person matching the description at another business.

When they approached, however, the person, later identified as Tyrabiya Malek Kearney, 16, of Roanoke Rapids fled, but was located on Professional Drive by Officer Jason Williams.

Kearney, who was determined not to be the suspect in the Eye Center larceny, was charged with resist, delay and obstruct, and released to a responsible person until his April 1 court date.

The Eye Center larceny investigation continues.

At approximately 9 p.m, Officer Ariel Burgess responded to a larceny call at Walmart.

Loss prevention reported Angela Dorene Mitchum, 33, of Roanoke Rapids, allegedly took items without paying.

Burgess arrested and charged Mitchum, who received a $500 bond and February 8 court date, with larceny and possession of stolen goods.

Master Officer Gerald Morris assisted.

Sunday January 11, 2016

At approximately 9:45 a.m., several units responded to a breaking and entering in progress call on Mullen Drive.

A concerned neighbor told officers several people went into an abandoned residence.

Officers went inside and located three people.

Arkies Ty-kill Sommerville, 18, of Roanoke Rapids, was arrested and charged with breaking/entering, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of schedule II after cocaine was found in his pocket during a subsequent search.

Devon Mayo, 21, of Roanoke Rapids, was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and served with several outstanding orders for arrest.

A 14-year-old juvenile was also taken into custody.

Sommerville received a $3,000 bond and Mayo received a $7,000 bond. Both have February 5 court dates.

The juvenile was released to the custody of a parent and will be referred to Juvenile Services for adjudication.

Benthall was the charging officer and was assisted by Lieutenant Bruce Norton, Peck and officers Jason Williams and Matt Hunsucker.

Halifax County Deputy Sheriff Bozard and his dog also assisted.
