A man who used the identity of the victim he allegedly stole a vehicle from to avoid prosecution is wanted by Roanoke Rapids police.

Chief Chuck Hasty said in a statement Sergio Fields, 35, of Littleton, is wanted for identity theft, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, driving while license revoked, possession of an open container, resist, delay and obstruct an officer and giving fictitious information to an officer.

The original victim, whose name was released on the Roanoke Rapids police blotter published Monday, went to the police department Monday about his identity being used in a Sunday motor vehicle theft.

During the investigation it was determined the victim was not the person arrested and further investigation led to the warrants being taken out on Fields.

Hasty said Fields is encouraged to surrender.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to call the police department at 252-533-2810 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
