A Woodland couple surrendered to the Northampton County Sheriff's Office today following an investigation in which they were charged with cutting down trees on property they were renting.

Captain M.D. DeLoatch Sr. said Collie and Carlisea Neal, 59 and 54 respectively, cut down at least 40 trees on the property where they rented a house in the Woodland area off Highway 258.

The two counts of injury to trees they face reflect two verifiable times the trees were cut, Deloatch said. It is not clear whether the timber was sold.

A statement on the matter says all trees on the property were cut.

The victim filed a report on the matter on July 17 and Sergeant Patrick Jacobs investigated the complaint filed by the property owner who did not give them permission to cut the trees.

The Neals were given $2,000 unsecured bonds and are scheduled to appear in court September 15.

DeLoatch said the pair surrendered with an attorney and have not made a statement.

“The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office will continue to investigate any and all crime in the county where people report cut, harvested, damaged trees, or property,” Sheriff Jack Smith said in a statement. “We are committed to bringing those who commit these types of crimes to justice.”
