RRPD blotter: July 31-August 2

The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:

July 31

Around 5 p.m., Investigator Chris Babb was on foot patrol inside Walmart when he noticed Joseph Richardson, 49, of Roanoke Rapids, acting nervous in the tool section of the store.

When Babb approached, Richardson walked to a different section.

When Richardson was leaving the store Babb noticed several bulges and could hear a clanking sound with every step he took on the way out of the store.

Babb approached Richardson after he exited the store and recovered several items not paid for.

Babb cited Richardson for larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was released until his September 9 court date.

August 1

Around 2 a.m., Master Officer Gorton Williams responded to a call of a disruptive person inside Walmart.

Walmart staff told Williams Steven Anthony Taylor, 29, of Roanoke Rapids, was yelling and making obscene gestures to customers and staff.

Staff asked Taylor to leave, but he refused.

Williams arrested and charged Taylor with intoxicated and disruptive behavior.

Taylor received a $1,000 bond and an August 28 court date.

Around 10:30 p.m., Sergeant Mike Moseley conducted a traffic stop on West Fifth Street for a driving while impaired investigation.

Moseley spoke with the driver, Dennis Wade Newton Jr., 41, of Gaston.

Moseley arrested and charged Newton with driving while impaired and possession of an open container.

Newton, who was out on bond on previous charges, received an $80,000 bond and a September 28 court date.

Lieutenant Jeff Baggett assisted.

Around 11 p.m., Williams responded to a larceny call at Walmart.

Staff told Williams Leona Yelma Putney, 49, of Roanoke Rapids, allegedly took items from the store without paying.

Williams arrested and charged Putney with larceny and possession of stolen goods.

She was released on a written promise to appear in court September 8.

Around 11 p.m., Baggett responded to a call of property damage at West Fifth Street.

The victim told Baggett that while driving a car someone pulled up and threw a beer bottle causing damage to the vehicle.

Baggett tracked down the car because the victim provided a tag number and direction of travel.

Forrest Junious Lawrence Garner, 29, of Roanoke Rapids. was arrested and charged for assault on a female and damage to property.

Garner was given a $1,000 bond and a September 4 court date.

Officer Adam Salmon assisted.

August 2

Around 2:30 p.m., Master Officer Gerald Morris responded to a larceny call at Walmart.

Staff told Morris Joyce Ann Putnam, 72, of Enfield, took items from the store without paying for them. Morris arrested and charged Putnam with larceny and possession of stolen goods.

Putnam received a $300 bond and a September 18 court date.

Around 10 p.m., Salmon responded to investigate a call about a reckless driver on West Tenth Street.

Salmon located the vehicle in a ditch on Ransome Street, with the driver Tojil “Fredy “Elias Cruz, 29, of Roanoke Rapids, trying to get the vehicle out.

Salmon arrested and charged Cruz with driving while impaired and no operator’s license.

Cruz was released to a responsible person and has a September 21 court date.
