Vikings return as State Champions

The Halifax Academy Lady Vikings Softball team took a shorter road this year, but earn back to back 1A NCISAA State Championship Friday afternoon at Oakwood School.

The 2017 State Champions return to Oakwood as #1 seed for the 2018 State Play-off, but due to the sever weather threat, the double elimination tournament was changed to a single elimination winner take all.

The #1 seed Halifax Academy (16-2) faced the #4 seed Ridgecroft (12-7) Friday morning with Halifax winning 13-4 to advance to the Championship game.

Candice Smith was the winning pitcher, pitching all seven innings with throwing eight strike-outs. 

Smith also helped on the offense side with a double and a homerun while Ashton Garner and Ashlyn Cooke hit three singles each. Ashlynn Liles and Ashlyn Knight  had a double each. Morgan Hudomint had two singles. Emerson Poole and Sydney Smith had a single each. 


Next the #1 seed Halifax (17-2) faced the #2 seed Lawrence Academy (21-3) in the 1A NCISAA State Championship Friday afternoon.

Halifax became Back to Back State Champions beating Lawrence beating 7-2.

Candice Smith returned to the mound as the winning pitcher in the seven inning game. Smith earned three strike-outs in the game.

Ashton Garner came to play at the plate for the Lady Vikings with a Home Run, two doubles and a single in the Championship win. Candice Smith had two singles, Emerson Poole and Ashlyn Liles had a double each, while Ashton Knight had a single.
