The Halifax Academy Women’s Soccer team began the season last weekend with a 2-game Showcase at Community Christian High School in Wilson, NC.

The first game was played against Lee Christian out of Sanford, NC with a resulting 4-1 loss.  The lone goal was scored by Holly Forsht on a nice volley from a corner kick taken by Whitney George.  The team outshot Lee Christian, but failed to find the goal too often to come away with a win.

The following day, the Halifax Academy Vikings took the field against Hickory Christian Academy from Hickory, NC and came away with a 3-1 loss.  The lone goal was scored by co-captain Abby George from distance assisted by co-captain Maddie Suiter at mid-field.

"These first two games showed us that we are a younger, inexperienced team with a few veteran leaders who are doing a great job helping to bring along the newer players very quickly. Five girls who had never seen a soccer field two weeks prior to the start of the season received playing time over the weekend and showed us that we have some potential to improve as a team over the coming weeks", stated Vikings coach Tim George.

Thursday night Halifax Academy traveled to Raleigh to play Neuse Christian Academy.  The Vikings came away with a 3-2 victory in a much improved game.  Abby George began the scoring off of an assist from Whitney George.  Whitney scored the final two goals with an assist from Abby George and a penalty kick conversion.

"The offense finally started to come around, especially later in the game with much better possession and ball control from the entire team. The defense was greatly improved from the weekend with some better understanding of positioning and defensive support for each other.  Kate Starnes is especially showing her leadership on defense with her ability to support and develop the newer players.  Natalie Watts is building confidence in goal and newcomer, Caryn Aycock, received significant playing time on the back line as well with good results" Stated coach George.

Coach George added, "The team still has a long way to go as the season progresses, but I see the potential for this team to build on the success of Thursday night’s game.  All three games played so far were against what look to be strong contenders at the end of the season so it was a good test to see where we are and where we need to work."

Saturday, March 10th, the team travels to Wilson, NC to attend the Brittany Showcase along with 82 other teams from across the state.  The Vikings will be taking on Southeastern Homeschool out of WIlmington, NC before entering strong conference play next week against the defending state champions from Kerr Vance Academy on Tuesday the 13th.
