A man charged in the death of his grandmother Friday now faces a murder charge in the shooting death of a Hollister man earlier this month.

Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp said in a statement this afternoon Investigators have served a warrant on Isaiah Kahleal Evans Caesar, 18, for the murder of 33-year-old Roderick Bluesky Mills.

Caesar was charged Friday in the murder of his grandmother, 74-year-old Sally Copeland Evans.

Tripp said an autopsy is scheduled today for Evans.

Tripp said in the statement there is evidence which connects Caesar to the Hollister crime and the murder of Mills. Caesar, a Marine who has been reported as absent without leave since April 2, has family ties to the Hollister area, the sheriff said, without elaborating.

The sheriff’s office began investigating the Mills murder in the early morning hours of April 11.

One man, Javon O’Neil Richardson, has been charged with obstruction in the Mills murder after presenting himself as a witness but declining to cooperate with investigators.

Tripp declined to comment on whether Caesar and Richardson had previous ties or whether Mills and Caesar were acquainted.

Richardson was arrested in Bangor, Maine, and is expected to return to Halifax County by the middle of this week, Tripp said in the statement.

Tripp said it is unlikely Caesar will be returned to the military any time soon on the desertion charges. “He’s not going to leave without a judge’s order.”

The sheriff said investigators have been in contact with United States Marine Corps.

It is expected Caesar will have his first court appearance for the murder of his grandmother and the murder of Mills on May 16. He remains in custody in Halifax County without opportunity for bond.

The investigation leading to the charge of murder in his grandmother’s death began after Evans was reported missing last Thursday.

Caesar lived part-time with his grandmother in the Roanoke Rapids area Tripp said last week.

Caesar was found holed up in a Rocky Mount hotel room and explosive material was found in the room.

Tripp declined comment today on what the explosive materials were and for what purposes they might be used. There was no evidence of a bomb found, he said in a statement last week.

Evans was found deceased in the Deep Creek Road area outside Roanoke Rapids Friday.

The sheriff’s office has declined to say how she was killed.
