Identification of a driver who died in a head-on collision with an ambulance Tuesday night is pending notification of next of kin, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

Sergeant A.S. Genao, according to a preliminary report by Trooper Z. Perry, said the collision occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Highway 125 near American Legion Road outside Roanoke Rapids.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was headed north on Highway 125 while the Halifax County EMS ambulance was headed south. Genao said the ambulance was not carrying a patient at the time of the crash.

The crash occurred in a slight curve of the highway and the passenger vehicle went left of the centerline and collided head-on with the ambulance. The passenger vehicle ran off the road to the right, while the ambulance overturned. EMS personnel onboard the ambulance were not injured, Genao said.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, who was the sole occupant, died at the scene.
