Mike Stainback, known for riding his bike around the city and visiting various businesses, was struck by a vehicle at Ninth Street and Roanoke Avenue this afternoon.

Interim Roanoke Rapids police Chief Bobby Martin said the crash occurred shortly after 1:15 p.m. near Burger King as Stainback, who is nicknamed ZZ, was riding his bike across the street.

He was taken to Halifax Regional for treatment and was expected to be airlifted to another facility.

The crash remains under investigation but the driver does not appear to be at fault. Other regulatory motor vehicle violations may be addressed, however, Martin said.

Roanoke Rapids Graded School District spokesman Les Atkins said in a statement, “Mike who we call ‘ZZ’ is certainly a friend of our district. He has helped with our many sports programs for more than 20 years. We are certainly saddened by this news. Our staff wishes him a full recovery and looks forward to seeing him on our campus again soon.”
