As the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District approaches Spring Break, the buzz of activity within our school community shows no signs of slowing down.

In fact, Spring is one of the busiest and most exciting times of the school year.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of student activities, as staff, we are already gearing up and planning for the year ahead.

On Friday afternoon, Finance Officer Andrea Midgette, Director of Facilities and Operations Robbie Clements, and I met with the Halifax County Manager Dia Denton, Assistant County Manager Christina Wells, and Finance Director Mary Duncan to discuss funding for the 2024-25 school year.

These meetings are a highlight of our year, and we are thankful for the support of the Halifax County leadership.

Belmont Elementary School illustrated their creativity during our recent Night of the Arts event. From musical performances by students representing each grade level to art displays lining the halls, their wonderful talent was on display.

A standout feature was the towering rendition of Wassily Kandinsky's renowned masterpiece Color Study standing proudly at over eight feet tall.

Crafted by Belmont students under the guidance of Mr. Justin Fender, the art teacher, this masterpiece showcased the artwork of every Belmont Bee.

At Chaloner Middle School, the spirit of competition is alive and thriving as baseball and track season kick off.

While the track team is still preparing for the season ahead, our baseball and softball teams are in full swing and are demonstrating their strength on the field.

I had the exciting opportunity to travel to Greensboro last week with Chaloner's Quiz Bowl team as they competed at the state level.

I am so proud of their accomplishments as they secured an impressive 8th place in the state.

As a volunteer reader, I read the questions in two rounds, and I was awed at the depth of learning that all of the competitors showed!

Roanoke Rapids High School continues to have success both on and off the field. The Men's Golf Team clinched the top spot in a conference match held at Chockoyotte Country Club, adding another feather to their cap with three conference wins under their belt.

The Lady Jackets softball team improved to 2-1 in the Big East 2A/3A conference and 5-1 overall, and the Varsity Men’s Baseball team is now 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.

I would like to extend enthusiastic congratulations to Emma Grace Wells and Kamdyn Paige Jean, who have been named Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, for their outstanding academic achievements.

This is no easy feat!

RRHS proudly announced its Junior Marshals for the graduating class, a cohort of bright individuals poised to lead the way forward. Congratulations go out to Jillian Tanner Ott, Casey Gardner Neal, Charlotte Avery Qualls, Shandi Starr Byrum, Landen Hunter Briggs, Maecy Elizabeth Garriss, Bailey Sky Cain, Savannah Grace Medlin, Emma Marie Snead, Reagan Worthington Taylor, and Ki’Asia Monique Rawls.

The Platinum Ringleaders, our high school First Robotics Competition Team, won the Rookie Inspiration Award at the First Robotics Tournament in Asheville on Sunday. We are proud of students for their STEM creations.

Students at Roanoke Rapids Early College High School are exemplifying the spirit of service, collectively completing an impressive 3,900 hours of community service.

Their commitment to making a positive impact echoes far beyond the school walls, embodying the values of compassion and altruism.

Additionally, congratulations are in order for Jake Wynne and Dashanay Purnell, who secured first place and third place, respectively, in the Optimist International Club Oratorical Contest.

RRGSD will celebrate EC Advocacy Week this week, March 18-22. The days are as follows: March 18 - Physical Disability Day, March 19 - Learning and Communication Disability Day, March 20 - Autism Acceptance Day, March 21 - Down Syndrome Activity, March 22 - Pledge Day.

Our Board and district leadership team have had a busy week too. Last week included all four Board Committee meetings, and tonight (Tuesday) is our March Board meeting.

As we head towards the end of March, let us carry forward the spirit of creativity, compassion, and excellence that defines us as Yellow Jackets.

Together, we can accomplish anything.
