Two men the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said robbed a Roanoke Rapids convenience store early Wednesday morning were taken into custody following a canine track.

Lieutenant Shane Guyant said shortly after midnight Deputy Ethan Johnson was dispatched to an armed robbery which occurred at Speedway at the intersection of Thelma and Bolling roads.

Two men wearing masks and hooded jackets entered the store with a firearm and demanded money.

Johnson quickly obtained what Guyant described as useful suspect information and reported that information to other deputies.

While responding to the crime scene Deputy M. Wilkins noticed a black Nissan partially parked on Thelma Road with two individuals standing near the car.

As soon as the two individuals – later identified as James Moody, 18, and Jaquarious Williams, 23 – saw Wilkins they ran toward a wooded area.

Corporal R. Chin and his dog Duri arrived and received assistance from Sergeant E. Richardson and Roanoke Rapids police officers Lieutenant A. Salmon and officers T. Acree and C. Majette.

Duri tracked straight to where the men were hiding in a wooded area near Wood Store Road.

Moody, of Enfield, and Williams, of Roanoke Rapids, were taken into custody and charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Duri located the cash register drawer taken as well as the money it held.

The men received $75,000 bonds and October 27 court dates.

“The store associate was very calm and helpful, and did an excellent job providing quick and detailed information to Deputy Johnson,” Lieutenant Harold Phillips said. “Our deputies and the officers from Roanoke Rapids did an outstanding job working together to quickly capture these violent suspects with no incident.”
