Halifax Community College’s (HCC) Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) and Student Support Services (SSS) departments will host a TRiO Day and College Expo on Feb. 22.

TRiO Day is an opportunity to focus attention on the need for increased investment in first-generation college students.

Enacted by a Congressional Resolution in 1986, National TRiO Day is a call to citizens from all walks of life to come together to promote educational access and success in communities where TRiO Programs continue to create change.

By providing students, professionals, alumni and affiliates the chance to contribute through community service, TRiO Day celebrates the lives that have been transformed by college access and success.

“TRiO Day is essential to the Roanoke Valley as a means of increasing college enrollment, workforce development skills, and an improved quality of life,” said Dr. Sherida Gholston, director of Student Support Services. “We have placed a strong emphasis on the importance of financial literacy and money management skills.”

HCC Student Support Services leaders have planned a program that includes an exceptional keynote speaker.

Ja’Net Adams is an International speaker, author, and the owner of Debt Sucks University, but when she was in college she let money rule her life.

A short time after graduation she found herself in $50,000 of debt.

She dug out of the debt in two years by following the principles that she now speaks about to audiences all around the world as a professional motivational speaker.

She speaks around the world to various universities and corporations about financial literacy.

Adams recently released her new book Debt Sucks! A College Student’s Guide To Winning With Money So They Can Live Their Dreams!

Her advice has been featured by such institutions as the Huffington Post, NPR, CNBC, Forbes magazine, and  USA Today.

The event is free and open to the public.
