Roanoke Rapids City Manager Joseph Scherer said he was pleased with the results of the city’s annual audit for the fiscal year ending in June of last year.

“The city administration is proud to announce they have received another annual financial audit with no negative findings or management issues,” he said. “This makes the fifth year in a row the city has received this outstanding type of audit report.”

The audit was conducted by Gergory T. Redman, a Tarboro CPA, and its findings were reviewed and approved by the Local Government Commission. “The LGC monitors the fiscal health of local governments and provides assistance to local governments and public authorities in North Carolina.”

Said Scherer: “What the audit’s findings mean is that the city administration and the finance director in particular are managing the city’s tax dollars in a fiscally sound manner through effective internal controls and management compliance measures. All the city’s funds are being controlled and used appropriately with no evidence of mismanagement, fraud, waste or abuse.”

In other matters in his regular report, the city manager noted:

The police department is working on starting a Citizens on Patrol class this spring. “We encourage all our residents to consider participating in this program so that communication between the police and citizens can be improved, along with everyone gaining a better appreciation of what’s involved in being a law enforcement officer.”

There have been recent acts of vandalism at Chaloner Park. “Acts appear to be occurring between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. The (police department) will increase their nighttime patrols there and additional cameras have been installed in the park area.”

The tennis courts at T.J. Davis and the batting cages at Chockoyotte Park are moving along. The painting of tennis court lines has been delayed due to weather.
