The Roanoke Rapids Public Library presented awards today to the children who participated in its Summer Learning Program.

Derrick Flood, library operations supervisor, told the parents and children, along with Mayor Emery Doughtie, that during this year’s program children read 267 books. Last year the total was 190 books.

This year the children read 14,395 minutes while last year the total was 10,380.

This year there were 16 children who were honored with joining the 300-minute circle while last year there were 14.

The number of children reaching the incentive award for eight activities was 12, the same as last year.

“It’s a privilege to see many excel,” Head Librarian Jeff Watson said.

Flood told the children and parents, “We appreciate all the hard work that readers and parents have done this year to learn how libraries enhance our lives by encouraging reading and lifelong learning.”

Doughtie said, “I congratulate you and your parents on making sure you’re in a place that’s cool and helps you make good decisions.”
