Roy Justis Stansbury, 82, of Roanoke Rapids, departed from this life on Wednesday afternoon April 15, 2020 surrounded by his family after a courageous and long fight with cancer.

Mr. Stansbury was born in Halifax County on October 14, 1937, the son of Etta Smith Stansbury and James Lee Stansbury. 

Stansbury, a United States Army Veteran was an alumnus of Davie School, a charter member of Davie Fire Department, a volunteer firefighter with the Roanoke Rapids Fire Department, and a member of First Christian Church. 

He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching FOX News, NASCAR, and breakfast and coffee time with his friends at Oscar’s. His former places of employment included Western Auto, Ralphs BBQ catering, Halifax Linen Service, Halifax Farmers Supply, and Gaston Hardware. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Dean Keeter Stansbury, who he married on July 18, 1959. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his brothers Willis, Horace, and Alvin Stansbury; his sisters Mae Lynch, Bell Gray, Polly Wilson, Mary Rue Bell, and Bessie Bennett, as well as his father and mother in-law, William and Lucille Keeter. 

Mr. Stansbury was survived by his daughters, Kimberly Graybeal and husband Frank of Littleton, Kristi Wheeler and husband Anthony of Roanoke Rapids; Grandchildren Nicholas Hite of Roanoke Rapids, Neal Hite of Littleton, Kevin Wheeler and Kendall Wheeler of Roanoke Rapids; Great Grandchildren J.T. Mckenzie and Lily Hite of Roanoke Rapids and his sister, Katherine S. Faison of Roanoke Rapids along with numerous nephews and nieces. 

Arrangements are being handled by Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids. 

A private service is planned for family and friends with services conducted by Randy Martin. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. 

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be mailed to Hope for Hardy, 75 Longview Drive Littleton, NC 27850. 

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Menna Sekaran, Dr. Michael Sorensen and staff of Roanoke Valley Cancer Center, Dr. Ethan Basch, Dr. Gary Winzelberg, the staff of UNC Health Care, and the staff of Community Home Care and Hospice in Roanoke Rapids for the care and concern shown to Mr. Stansbury.
