Halifax Community College (HCC) leadership continues to closely monitor the ever-changing COVID-19 virus situation.

Beginning on Wednesday, HCC will shift all curriculum classes to an online instruction model through at least April 13. 

For today and Tuesday, all classes will continue in their traditional format as instructors work to make the seamless shift to online classes.

Because some classes are not suitable to online instruction, classroom instruction will still be available on a limited basis. These departments include Cosmetology, Welding, Automotive, Basic Law Enforcement Training, Fire/EMS, and other laboratory-based classes. Clinical instruction for all Allied Health departments will follow the directives of the clinical sites.

“We recognize that some of our students will struggle with gaining access to online instruction because of lack of broadband capabilities in our service area,” said Dr. Michael Elam, president of HCC. “In an effort to combat this, our campus will remain open to all students. However, we are implementing frequent cleaning and sanitizing of all public areas and are implementing a social distancing policy for all campus areas.”

Charter/Spectrum and Comcast have both developed a plan for students who do not have Internet access currently. Students can contact either company and secure two months of free Internet service in order to help them maintain their academic pathway. 

In addition, T-Mobile and other wireless service providers are working with their customers to ensure they have the access they need to remain on track.

For those without this option, the Learning Resource Center (LRC) and computer labs will be open to assist students in completing their online instruction. In addition, the HCC Bookstore will remain open to assist students with any curriculum needs they may have during this time.

“The campus will continue to operate, just with limited face-to-face student interaction,” Elam said. “All testing and student support services will be available both online and on-campus throughout the duration of this instructional shift.”

 While the campus will remain open, all events have been canceled or postponed until further notice.
