A Virginia man was jailed without the opportunity for bond Tuesday after police say he shot an acquaintance in the arm following an argument.

Captain Harold Phillips of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said the shooting occurred in the 300 block of Washington Street where officers were dispatched around 9 p.m. They were met by a man who sustained a non-life threatening injury to his right arm.

The victim said the man who shot him — Dana Darrell Coad, 37, of Sandston, Virginia — had left the scene.

Lieutenant D. Newsome and Officer J. Snider located Coad and took him into custody with assistance from Corporal K. Williams. The officers seized the firearm that was used, Phillips said.

Coad and the victim had a fight approximately 20 minutes before the shooting. After the initial fight, the two men separated and went inside their respective residences.

Coad then gathered a few things from inside the residence he was visiting.

While walking back to his car, he placed a few items inside when another argument began between the two that turned physical.

Coad pulled a non-holstered pistol from his coat pocket, shot the victim, and left.

Detective N. Bankert charged Coad with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He has a district court appearance Thursday.
