Edith Harris of Halifax was recently sworn in as a Guardian ad Litem Child Advocate by Judge Teresa R. Freeman in Halifax County.

In her new role, Harris, alongside an attorney advocate, will be handling cases in both Halifax and Northampton Counties.

A GAL helps to ensure that children are not overlooked in the legal system, giving them a voice in court while advocating for their best interests.

The North Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program was created by the state legislature in 1983 to provide abused and neglected children with an independent advocate during court proceedings. GAL advocates work alongside an attorney advocate to form a team that safeguards the child's legal rights and promotes their best interests in abuse and neglect cases.

The next GAL training session will begin in early spring 2025.
