A Halifax man and Roanoke Rapids woman remained in the Halifax County Detention Center without the opportunity for bond as of this report due to pending charges and their arrests Thursday afternoon for felony cocaine possession.

Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Major Anzell M. Harris said the arrests of James David Williams, 50, and Brandy Lias, 51, occurred around 3 p.m. on Highway 903 near Dog Pound Road when Deputy J. Butler observed a vehicle approaching at a high rate of speed.

Butler stopped the vehicle and identified the driver as Williams and the passenger as Lias.

During a consent search, a glass smoking pipe with residue and a silver tin containing crack cocaine was seized. There were several empty open containers inside the vehicle.

Williams and Lias were both arrested and transported to be processed.

Williams was charged with felony possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while license revoked, no liability insurance, fictitious registration number plate and violation of a court order.

Harris said the court order violation stemmed from a matter between Lias and Williams on October 26 where Williams was arrested by Corporal M. Sledge for assault on a female for pulling Lias’s hair and snatching her.

Lias was charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Lias, who had a district court scheduled today also has pending district court dates on December 3 for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and injury to personal property and a December 13 court date for simple assault and injury to personal property.

Williams has a November 20 district court date and several other pending court dates including a November 18 superior court date for larceny of motor vehicle parts.

HCSO Sergeant D. Harrison and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol assisted.
