The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office reported the following, according to Major Anzell M. Harris:

Deputy assaulted

A Weldon man who attempted to flee from law enforcement Thursday after placing his 4-year-old child on the ground Thursday was also charged with traffic counts as well as assaulting a deputy.

Prentis Anderson Jr., 27,was charged with felony flee to elude with a motor vehicle, assault with physical injury to law enforcement, driving while license revoked, fictitious number plate, no liability insurance, carrying a concealed firearm, resist/delay/obstruct, simple possession of marijuana and child abuse.

Deputy D. Bybee sustained minor injuries, Sheriff Tyree Davis said.

Around 4:30 p.m,, Bybee attempted to stop a vehicle heading west on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway near Fairground Lane. 

Anderson accelerated and lost control while turning to merge onto the northbound lanes of Interstate 95.

When Anderson lost control of the vehicle, he got out, placed his child on the ground and  attempted to flee in the vehicle, which appeared to have collided with another vehicle.

Anderson refused repeated commands to comply and was tased. 

He continued to violently resist and assaulted Bybee by striking him in the face. 

Anderson broke free and ran into the woods before being apprehended a short time later. Anderson was found to be in possession of marijuana. A concealed handgun was found in the vehicle and his driver's license was indefinitely suspended.

A witness reported that Anderson sideswiped a semi-truck and his vehicle showed evidence that this may have occurred. 

However, no trucker stopped or came back to the scene.

Anderson was jailed without the opportunity for bond due to several pending court dates.

He has an August 29 district court date for Thursday’s charges.

Heroin found during intake

On Thursday a Winston-Salem man was taken to the Halifax County Detention Center after he was charged with DWI.

During intake, 25 bindles of heroin attached to the groin of Erik Jacobsen, 32, were found by detention center staff.

The Halifax Regional Drug and Gang Task Force was notified and responded. 

In addition to the DWI charge, Jacobsen was charged with trafficking in opium/heroin, possession with intent to sell/deliver heroin, felony possession of heroin and possession of a controlled substance in a jail.

He remains in the detention center under a $100,000 secured bond.
