The Weldon Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Christopher Davis:
On Tuesday shortly before 8:15 p.m. Officer A. Dickens conducted a traffic stop for a speeding violation on Highway 158 near Garris Street.
Dickens identified the driver as Jumar Shawn Johnson, 20, of Weldon and observed the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle.
With assistance from officers A. Green and A. Way, Dickens asked everyone inside to step out so he could search them and the vehicle.
A small amount of marijuana and what appeared to be crack cocaine was located as well as a handgun which had been reported stolen.
Johnson and Caleb Aursby were placed under arrest and taken before a Halifax County magistrate.
Johnson was charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm, driving while license revoked, carrying a concealed weapon and received a state speeding citation.
Aursby was charged with felony possession of cocaine, felony possession of a stolen firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, and possession of marijuana.
Johnson received a $4,000 secured bond with an August 29 district court date.
Aursby, who has pending appearances in Halifax County Superior Court, was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has the same district court date as Johnson.
Disturbance
On Sunday shortly after 9:45 p.m. Sergeant I. Smith responded to a disturbance call at a convenience store in the 1500 block of Julian R. Allsbrook Highway.
A man identified as Kevin Turner, 37, of Halifax, was causing a disturbance.
Smith learned Turner needed a ride to Garysburg and his sister was called.
While waiting, Turner became irate, yelled and refused to cooperate with Smith, who placed him under arrest.
He refused to get into Smith’s vehicle and was subsequently charged with resisting a public officer and disorderly conduct.
He was jailed without the opportunity for bond due to a pending district court date in Northampton County.
He has an August 7 district court date in Halifax County.
Officer D. Thomas, the Roanoke Rapids Police Department and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
Assault
On Sunday around 4 a.m. Smith responded to an assault call in the 500 block of West First Street.
Smith noticed two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed near W.C. Rivers Road on Highway 158.
Smith stopped one vehicle and identified the driver as Ronnie Washington, 41, of Weldon.
Davis said Washington advised that he was being followed by a female, which turned out to be the victim.
Once the victim arrived, Smith learned that Washington had assaulted her by grabbing her hair and punching her in the face.
The victim had signs she had been assaulted.
Washington was placed under arrest and charged with assault on a female.
He was jailed without the opportunity for bond and has an August 7 district court date.
