Umel Jackson, charged in May during a standoff with Halifax County officers, waived his right to a federal detention today.

Magistrate Judge Robert T. Numbers II ordered Jackson to be detained pending trial on his federal indictment at the government’s request.

Federally, Jackson faces a charge of illegally receiving a firearm while under indictment, which is tied to an ATF complaint. An execution of a local search warrant led to the May 20 standoff.

The text order contained in the court file noted that Jackson was to be remanded to the custody of the state attorney general’s office or to a designee of the attorney general’s office with the understanding that he be placed in a correctional facility that would, to the extent practicable, keep him separate from persons awaiting or serving sentences or being held in custody pending appeal.

The order noted that Jackson must be afforded a reasonable opportunity for private consultation with his defense counsel.

On order of a court of the United States or on request of an attorney for the government, the person in charge of the corrections facility must deliver the defendant to a United States marshal for the purpose of an appearance in connection with a court proceeding.

As of this report Jackson was still being held in the Halifax County Detention Center.

“The defendant is aware of the nature of the hearing, the evidence that was likely to be presented at the hearing, and the consequences of waiving the hearing,” the waiver form says. ”The defendant is currently in custody due to another case. The defendant reserves the right to reopen his detention hearing upon his release from custody.”

In addition to his federal court indictment, Jackson has a pending district court on August 29 for charges associated with the standoff and a superior court date for charges associated with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon and other counts. That case had been tentatively set for today. According to detention center records it appears those cases will be heard in August.
