The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Roanoke Valley will be held on Friday, July 26 at the Kirkwood Adams Community Center.

The center is located at 1100 Hamilton Street in Roanoke Rapids and will begin at 6 p.m. with pre-registration set at 5 p.m. The event culminates at 11 p.m.

Relay For Life is a community of survivors, caregivers, local citizens, volunteers, and participants who believe that the future can be free from cancer and own the power to make that change.

“The American Cancer Society’s vision is to end cancer as we know it, for everyone,” said Holly Durham, senior development manager with American Cancer Society. “Our mission is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.”

Durham said last year there were 1.9 million new cases of cancer diagnosed in the United States. “Thanks to that shared passion, the lifesaving mission of the American Cancer Society can’t be stopped, ensuring we are here for everyone who needs us.”

The Survivor Victory Lap will be right after opening ceremonies and at dusk the luminaria ceremony will be held to remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have battled or are still battling cancer.

Cancer survivors are encouraged to register at 1-800-227-2345 press option 4. All survivors who register will receive a purple Relay Survivor T-Shirt.

Food will be available for a donation .

Next year marks the 40th year that Relay has been a part of local communities.
