A Roanoke Rapids man was charged Friday evening after a domestic call in the 1400 block of Hamilton Street.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said when Lieutenant D.A. Newsome attempted to speak with Justin Roger Nowell, the 40-year-old fled and hid in some bushes before Sergeant S. Langley and Newsome located him.

Guyant said officers located several items of drug paraphernalia on him.

Investigation determined Nowell assaulted a victim and prevented her from calling 911, the police chief said.

Nowell, who remains in the Halifax County Detention without the opportunity for bond, faces charges of assault by strangulation, second-degree kidnapping, assault on a female, resist a public officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, interfering with a communication device, and injury to personal property.

He has a May 23 district court date.
