An 18-year-old from the Chesapeake, Virginia area has been identified as the victim of an early morning shooting death on Madison Street.

Roanoke Rapids police Chief Shane Guyant said it is not clear why Jamari Dejon Haskins was in the 200 block of Madison Street shortly after midnight this morning. He said it is also not clear if Haskins had ties to the area. He said investigators are receiving no cooperation from witnesses who were at the 224 Madison Street address at the time of the fatal shooting.

Motive remains unknown as well, Guyant said.

Guyant said earlier today officers noticed several individuals at the residence including the deceased.  

The death was determined to be a homicide by investigators.
