The Weldon Police Department Monday arrested a Garysburg man wanted by United States Marshals for a federal probation violation.

Chief Christopher Davis said shortly before 1 a.m. Officer A. Dickens and Corporal I. Smith were at the 51 Sycamore Bar and Grill when they observed a man later identified as Ervin Hughes who appeared to  be intoxicated.

Hughes was walking to his vehicle and getting in when Dickens talked with him.

Smith ran the tag on the vehicle and learned that Hughes was wanted. He was arrested and placed on hold for transport to Raleigh.

In April Hughes admitted in federal court to a violation of parole and was told the court would continue the case for six months with a warning that if an additional violation was reported, the probation office would file a motion for revocation as well as request a warrant. Then he would be given a custody sentence.

Hughes had been sentenced in November of 2017 for possession with intent to distribute a quantity of cocaine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

He received a 75-month sentence and 36 months of federal supervised release which started May 27, 2022.

The United States Probation and Parole office noted that in October of 2022 Hughes tested positive for the use of marijuana and that his supervision conditions were modified to include participation in substance abuse treatment.

In November of 2022 the court was notified of the defendant again testing positive for the use of marijuana. Hughes’ supervision was continued to allow his participation in substance abuse treatment.

In January of this year the court was notified of the defendant testing positive for the use of marijuana. Hughes’ supervision was continued to allow his participation in substance abuse treatment.

In February Hughes submitted a urine specimen which returned positive for the use of marijuana. This result was confirmed through a lab certification test.

He also failed to participate as directed in a urinalysis program and failed to report for random drug testing via the surprise urinalysis program on November 30, 2022; December 8, 2022; and January 4, 2023.

“In view thereof, we respectfully petition the court to schedule a hearing, issue a notice to the defendant, and recommend that the term of supervision be revoked,” the United States Probation and Parole office said in March.

Stolen weapon

On Friday around 8 p.m. Dickens pulled over a vehicle on Washington Avenue and Third Street. Officer D. Thomas and Smith assisted.

Thomas talked with the rear passenger who was identified as Quanterris Stephenson, of Weldon.

Davis said Thomas saw the rear passenger was moving around a lot and it appeared as he was stuffing something under the seat.

Thomas told him to step out of the vehicle and Stephenson attempted to run. Thomas quickly apprehended him and found that he had a gun in his waistband which had been reported stolen out of Roanoke Rapids.

Stephenson was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of an open container and resist a public officer.

He received a $5,000 secured bond and September 13 court date.
