Shannon Golden understands the original track of Hurricane Florence. She also respects the tenacity of North Carolina residents who were ultimately impacted by the storm.

She has designed a T-shirt which reflects that spirit and has put them on preorder to buy supplies which will reach those victims.

The decision for this fundraiser was made after seeing the devastation Florence created through news accounts, social media and other outlets.

The shirts can be preordered by following this link.

"It could have happened to anyone of us if the track hadn't changed," said Golden, the owner of Shannon Golden Designs and Screenprint. "It was slated to come here. When it changed track all that anxiety changed from myself to my neighbors."

When she measured interest for the shirt fundraiser the idea was met with enthusiasm. As of this report there has been more than $900 raised to buy supplies for the hurricane victims.

She plans to have the items she buys from the sale of the shirts delivered through people going to the stricken areas to check on their families, friends or property. "It could be a church or a local organization, business or relief effort. With it happening so close we know there are local organizations who will be providing much needed supplies to areas hurt by Florence. While they're waiting on FEMA, we can gauge the need."

Her involvement in The Kindness Rocks Movement, where rocks with inspiring messages and artwork are hidden throughout the area and sometimes auctioned for charitable efforts, "Taught me that alone I can make a small difference. Together we can make a huge impact."

The rock auctions have paid motel expenses for fire victims, paid the expenses for a footstone for a toddler who died and paid for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners for those who might otherwise go without.

The supplies purchased through the T-shirt sale will be destined for as many impacted areas as sales allow. "They're going to wherever there's a need and we have someone going to that area."

The colors of the shirt pay tribute to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, she said. "In coming up with a design for the shirt, I realized that many of our area's young adults attend UNCW and this serves as a way to not only remember them but the devastation Hurricane Florence caused to the Wilmington area as a whole."

The message on the shirt — Stronger than a hurricane — is one Golden believes in. "Our state is stronger. Our people are stronger. Over three-fourths of our state was impacted in some way. I'm currently like everyone else, my heart is breaking for our North Carolina neighbors that were hardest hit by the hurricane."
